The Inevitable (Al-Waaqe'ah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ WHEN THAT which must come to pass [at last] comes to pass, 1 There is no denying that it will befall - 2 Degrading (some) and exalting (others); 3 when the earth shall be rocked 4 and the mountains fragmented 5 Turned to dust, floating in the air, 6 you shall be divided into three parties, 7 Thus, there shall be such as will have attained to what is right: oh, how [happy] will be they who have attained to what is right! 8 Companions of the Left, what are the Companions of the Left? 9 As for the Foremost, they will be the foremost! 10 These will be those Nearest to Allah: 11 They are in Gardens of peace. 12 (a throng of the ancients 13 but [only] a few of later times. 14 On studded thrones. 15 Reclining thereon facing each other. 16 immortal youths going round about them 17 With goblets, (shining) beakers, and cups (filled) out of clear-flowing fountains: 18 Wherefrom they get no aching of the head nor any madness, 19 and such fruits as they shall choose, 20 And the flesh of fowl such as they desire. 21 And pure, beautiful ones, 22 Like unto preserved pearls. 23 as reward for their deeds. 24 There they shall hear no idle talk nor any sinful speech. 25 Except the saying, “Peace, peace.” 26 And those on the right hand; what of those on the right hand? 27 Among thorn-less lote-trees. 28 And [banana] trees layered [with fruit] 29 And spreading shade, 30 and waters gushing, 31 and fruits in abundance, 32 unfailing and not forbidden. 33 And [upon] beds raised high. 34 We have indeed developed these women with an excellent development. 35 And made them virgins, 36 chastely amorous, 37 For the sake of the companions of the right hand. 38
