The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And by oath of the One Who created the male and the female. 3 Verily your endeavour is diverse. 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And (in all sincerity) testifies to the best,- 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 Unto him therefore We shall Indeed make easy the path to hardship. 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 It is indeed for Us to show the way, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 But the righteous one will avoid it - 17 even he who gives his wealth. to purify himself 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 Other than seeking the glory of his Lord, most high, 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
