The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Rise up and warn! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 Thy raiment purify, 4 And stay away from idols. 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 And [warn all men that] when the trumpet-call [of resurrection] is sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 And gave him abundant wealth 12 And gave him sons present before him. 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 After all that he desires that I should give more; 15 By no means; he is stubbornly opposed to Our Signs. 16 I shall inflict on him hardship, 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 Then he turned back and was arrogant 23 And said: "This is nothing but the magic of old, 24 Naught is this but the word of Man. 25 Him shall I soon roast in Hell. 26 And what will make you realize what hell is? 27 It does not allow anyone to live, and neither does it leave anyone to die; 28 Burning the skins! 29 over it are nineteen. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
