He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man. 2 Yet for all thou didst know, [O Muhammad,] he might perhaps have grown in purity, 3 or yet remember, and the Reminder profit him. 4 Now as for him who believes himself to be self-sufficient 5 to him thou attendest 6 And no blame is on you if he would not purify himself 7 And to him who came to you eagerly 8 And he fears, 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; 11 so let those who want to follow its guidance do so. 12 (It is) in Books held (greatly) in honour, 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble and purified. 16 Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 From a sperm-drop: He hath created him, and then mouldeth him in due proportions; 19 and then makes it easy for him to go through life; 20 Then He causes him to die, then assigns to him a grave, 21 Then He will raise him up again when He please. 22 Nay, but (man) has not done what He commanded him. 23 Then let man look at his food, 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then We broke open the earth, splitting [it with sprouts], 26 how We made the grain to grow, 27 grapes, vegetables, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 And garden-closes of thick foliage 30 And fruits and fodder,- 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 But when the Shout cometh 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 his consort, his sons, 36 Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him. 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And (many) faces on that day, on them shall be dust, 40 and veiled with darkness. 41 those will be ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity. 42
