In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Keep vigil the night long, save a little - 2 half of it, or reduce it a little; 3 and recite the Quran in a distinct tone; 4 For we shall charge thee with a word of weight. 5 Surely, getting up at night [for worship] is the most potent means of subduing the self and most suitable for the word [of prayer]. 6 You have by day prolonged occupations. 7 But recite the name of your Lord withdrawing yourself from everything, devoting yourself exclusively to Him. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 Bear with patience what they say, and gracefully come away from them. 10 Leave to Me those who belie, those who lead a life of pleasure, and bear with them yet a little while. 11 We have prepared for them fetters, flaming fire, 12 choking food and a painful punishment. 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 Verily We! We have sent unto you an apostle, a witness over you, even as We sent unto Fir'awn an apostle. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey, 17 The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled. 18 Verily this is an admonition; let him therefore, who will, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
