Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 I am for you a faithful Messenger, 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 Will you be left in what is here, secure [from death], 146 amidst gardens and fountains, 147 The fields of corn and date-palm trees with soft and tender spathes, 148 And you carve out of the mountains, homes, with skill. 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 Who corrupt the land and do not reform it." 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 Thou art but a mortal like us. So bring some token if thou art of the truthful. 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 So the retribution came on them. Lo! herein is indeed a portent, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
