The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
By the night, when it envelops, 1 And the day resplendent 2 Consider the creation of the male and the female! 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 So We will very soon provide him ease. 7 But as for he who withholds and considers himself free of need 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We will facilitate for him the difficult end. 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 But those most devoted to Allah shall be removed far from it,- 17 He who gives his wealth to be purified, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 and before long he will be well satisfied. 21
