He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 for how can you know that he might seek to purify himself, 3 or have been reminded [of the truth,] and helped by this reminder. 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 To him you attend; 6 though you are not to blame if he would not cleanse himself. 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 Of him wast thou unmindful. 10 No indeed, this is a Reminder; 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 On honoured leaves 13 lofty and pure, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 noble, pious. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 From what did He create him? 18 From Nutfah (male and female semen drops) He created him, and then set him in due proportion; 19 then the way eased for him, 20 Then He caused him to die and be buried 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let the human reflect on the food he eats, 24 That We watered it in abundance. 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 And cause the grain to grow therein 27 And grapes and herbage 28 And olive and palm trees 29 And thick gardens, 30 And fruits and fodder: 31 For use and convenience to you and your cattle. 32 But when the great calamity comes 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and father, 35 And his spouse and his son-- 36 Each man will have enough cares that day. 37 Many faces will that day be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Darkness will cover them, 41 They will be the unbelievers, transgressors. 42
