In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
O you who wraps himself [in clothing], 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 half of it, or reduce it a little; 3 Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. 4 We are about to cast upon you a weighty Word. 5 Surely in the watches of the night the soul is most receptive and words more telling. 6 True, there is for thee by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties: 7 And remember thou the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with an exclusive devotion. 8 The Lord of the East and the West-- there is no god but He-- therefore take Him for a protector. 9 And bear thou patiently what they say, and forsake them graciously. 10 Leave Me to those who cry lies, those prosperous ones, and respite them a little, 11 Verily with Us are heavy fetters and Scorch. 12 and a food that chokes, and a grievous chastisement. 13 On a Day whereon the earth and the mountains shall quake, and the mountains shall become a sand-heap poured forth. 14 We have indeed sent a Noble Messenger towards you, a present witness over you – the way We had sent a Noble Messenger towards Firaun. 15 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. 16 If you, disbelieve, how will you be able to protect yourselves from the hardships of the day which would even turn children grey-headed? 17 And the heaven shall be split therein. His promise indeed must be fulfilled. 18 This is indeed a Reminder. Let whosoever will take the Path to his Lord. 19
