The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 shun uncleanness; 5 And show not favour, seeking wordly gain! 6 and persevere for your Lord's sake. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that shall be a Harsh Day 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me Alone (to deal) with whom I created Alone (without any means, i.e. Al-Walid bin Al-Mughirah Al-Makhzumi)! 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 and yet, he greedily desires that I give yet more! 15 Nay! For lo! he hath been stubborn to Our revelations. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He planned and plotted. 18 May he be condemned! 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked around, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned back and was haughty; 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 I shall make him suffer the torment of hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 over it are nineteen. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
