These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 (They will be) in the midst of a Fierce Blast of Fire and in Boiling Water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin (of disbelief). 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 (We) and our fore-fathers of yore?” 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 and then, verily, O you who have gone astray and called the truth a lie, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 filling your bellies, with it 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 "So you will drink (that) like thirsty camels!" 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 It was We who decreed death among you. We will not be surpassed 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who caused it to descend from the cloud, or is it We Who cause it to descend? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have you thought about the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
