The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I do call to witness this City;- 1 and you are dwelling in this city -- 2 and by parent and offspring, 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Thinketh he that none hath power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 One tongue, and two lips, 9 And did We not show him the two highroads (of good and evil)? 10 But he hath not attempted the Ascent - 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 Of a related orphan, 15 or some needy person in distress, 16 Then he became of those who believed and enjoined on each other steadfastness and enjoined on each other compassion. 17 They are those on the Right Hand (the dwellers of Paradise), 18 But those who deny Our revelations are the people of the left hand: 19 who will be engulfed in the fire. 20
