A company of the former peoples 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and persisted in the Great Sin, 46 ever saying, 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up? 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say, [O Muhammad], "Indeed, the former and the later peoples 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then will ye fill your insides therewith, 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 Drinking even as the camel drinketh. 55 This will be their welcome on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is He who created you, then why do you not affirm the truth? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 Do ye create it or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 And you have already known the first creation, so will you not remember? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 If We willed, surely We would make it brackish. Wherefore give ye not thanks? 70 Did you consider the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
