The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear Allah? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 Therefore guard against (the punishment of) Allah and obey me: 144 "And no reward whatever do I ask of you for it: my reward rests with none but the Sustainer of all the worlds. 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 "In gardens and water springs?" 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 Will you still hew your dwellings in the mountains? 149 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 150 Do not obey the order of the wasteful, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 And do not touch her with harm, lest you be seized by the punishment of a terrible day." 156 But they hamstrung her and then regretted it. 157 so the punishment came down upon them. Surely in that there is a sign, but most of them would not believe. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
