A company of the former peoples 39 and also a large throng from those of later times. 40 But those of the left hand -- how (unhappy) those of the left hand -- 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 neither cool, neither goodly; 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and constantly said: 'What, when we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be restored to life? 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you, the erring ones and those that gave the lie to the Truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 like a thirsty camel". 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We created you; therefore why will you not believe? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Create him ye, or are We the Creator? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In order that We may bring in your place the likes of you and make you grow into what you know not. 61 And assuredly ye have fully known the first production wherefore heed ye not? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 (And say:) "We have fallen into debt; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Do ye bring it down (in rain) from the cloud or do We? 69 [It comes down sweet - but] were it Our will, We could make it burningly salty and bitter: why, then, do you not give thanks [unto Us]? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have brought into being the tree that serves as its fuel - or are We the cause of its coming into being? 72 We Ourselves made it for a reminder, and a boon to the desert-dwellers. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
