The Embryo (Al-Alaq)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Recite: In the Name of thy Lord who created, 1 Created man from a clinging substance. 2 Read! Your Lord is the Most Generous, 3 Who teacheth by the pen, 4 taught Man that he knew not. 5 No! [But] indeed, man transgresses 6 for he thinks himself self-sufficient. 7 Surely your returning is to your Lord. 8 Have you seen one who prevents 9 A bondman when he offers the prayer? 10 What will happen if the praying person is rightly guided 11 or is concerned with God-consciousness? 12 Have you seen if he denies and turns away - 13 Does he not know that Allah does see? 14 Nay! If he (Abu Jahl) ceases not, We will catch him by the forelock, 15 A lying, sinful forehead. 16 Then, let him call (for help) to his council (of comrades): 17 We also shall call the infernal guards. 18 Nay, Obey not thou him. But prostrate thyself, and draw near (unto Allah). ۩ 19
