Thamood cried lies to the Envoys 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Surely I am a faithful apostle to you 143 be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me! 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Will ye be left secure, in (the enjoyment of) all that ye have here? 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And green crops (fields etc.) and date-palms with soft spadix. 148 "And you carve houses out of mountains with great skill. 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the prodigal, 151 who do corruption in the earth, and set not things aright.' 152 They said, "You are only of those affected by magic. 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: (Behold) this she-camel. She hath the right to drink (at the well), and ye have the right to drink, (each) on an appointed day. 155 And do not touch her with evil, lest the punishment of a grievous day should overtake you. 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
