The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
I CALL TO witness the star of the pleiades when it has dipped 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor does he speak from [his own] inclination. 3 It [the Quran] is nothing but revelation sent down to him. 4 He has been taught by the Extremely Powerful. 5 one endowed with immense wisdom. He came forth and stood poised, 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 and then drew near, and came close, 8 Until a space of two bow (arcs) or even less remained, 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 His (Muhammad's) heart did not lie to him about what his eyes had seen. 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 by the lote-tree of the farthest limit, 14 near unto the garden of promise. 15 when the lote tree was covered in mystic splendour. 16 The sight did not shift, nor did it cross the limits. 17 He saw some of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you really considered al-Lat and al-"Uzza, 19 and, another, the third manat? 20 "What! For you the males and for Him the females?" 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatsoever he wisheth for! 24 And to God belongs the First and the Last. 25
