And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them. 47 And not a sign We showed them, but it was greater than its sister sign; and We seized them with chastisement, that haply they should return. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 but when We relieved them of the torment, they broke their word. 50 And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: 'O my people, do I not possess the kingdom of Egypt, and these rivers flowing beneath me? What, do you not see? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible man who can hardly make his meaning clear? 52 Why, then, have armlets of gold not been set upon him, or angels sent along with him? 53 He incited his people to levity and they obeyed him. Surely they were an iniquitous people. 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 And We made them a precedent and an ensample unto those after. 56
