The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
CONSIDER the sun and its radiant brightness, 1 And by oath of the moon when it follows the sun 2 And by the day as it shows up (the sun's) brightness; 3 The night when it covers him over, 4 By the heaven and Him Who builded it, 5 and by the earth and by Him Who stretched it out; 6 By the soul and Him Who propertioned it, 7 and imbued it with (the consciousness of) its evil and its piety: 8 He has succeeded who purifies it, 9 And he fails that corrupts it! 10 Thamud denied [their prophet] by reason of their transgression, 11 when that most hapless wretch from among them rushed forward [to commit his evil deed,] 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 Then they belied him and they hamstrung her; wherefore their Lord overwhelmed them for their crime, and made it equal. 14 And He feared not the consequence thereof 15
