Thamud denied the messengers 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 I have been sent as a trusted messenger to you. 143 "So fear Allah, keep your duty to Him, and obey me. 144 I ask of you no reward. My reward is with none but the Lord of the Universe. 145 Will you be left secure in this, 146 among gardens and fountains, 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 And you hew houses out of the mountains exultingly; 149 So fear Allah, and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and mend not (their ways)." 152 They said, "You are only bewitched and insane. 153 thou art naught but a mortal, like us; then produce a sign, if thou art one of the truthful.' 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 And the punishment seized them. Indeed in that is a sign, but most of them were not to be believers. 158 Surely thy Lord, He is the All-mighty, the All-compassionate. 159
