A large group from the earlier generations. 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And the shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 Or our fathers of yore? 48 Say: "Yea, those of old and those of later times, 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 will eat from the fruit of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you. Will ye then admit the truth? 57 Have you seen that which you emit? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you who cultivate it, or is it We Who develop it? 64 Had We wanted, We could have crushed it to bits and you would have been left to lament, 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Rather, we have been deprived." 67 Have you seen the water which you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 If We willed We verily could make it bitter. Why then, give ye not thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
