Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there in this an oath for one endowed with understanding? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 (And) the tall giants of Iram? 7 The like of which were not created in the land? 8 (Also consider how He dealt with) the Thamud, who carved their houses out of the rocks in the valley. 9 And the mighty Pharaoh 10 who all were insolent in the land 11 And who then spread a lot of turmoil in them. 12 and therefore thy Sustainer let loose upon them a scourge of suffering: 13 for, verily, thy Sustainer is ever on the watch! 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 But when He tries him (differently), then straitens to him his means of subsistence, he says: My Lord has disgraced me. 16 No indeed; but you honour not the orphan, 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 And ye devour inheritance - all with greed, 19 And you harbour intense love for wealth. 20 No! When the earth has been leveled - pounded and crushed - 21 And when the command of your Lord comes – and the angels row by row, 22 And brought [within view], that Day, is Hell - that Day, man will remember, but what good to him will be the remembrance? 23 He will say: "Ah! Would that I had sent forth (good deeds) for (this) my (Future) Life!" 24 So on that day, no one punishes like He does! 25 And His bonds will be such as none (other) can bind. 26 (It will be said to the pious): "O (you) the one in (complete) rest and satisfaction! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 So enter among My servants, 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
