A company of the former peoples 39 and a large group of those of later times. 40 And those on the Left Hand Who will be those on the Left Hand? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and the shadow of a smoking blaze 43 Nothing (will there be) to refresh, nor to please: 44 They had lived in luxury before this 45 And they have been persisting in the heinous offence. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: The first and the last, 49 Will all be brought together to the tryst of an appointed day. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 We! it is We Who created you: wherefore confess ye not? 57 Have ye seen that which ye emit? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Is it ye that cause it to grow, or are We the Cause? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We have made it to be a reminder and a benefit for the wayfarers. 73 Glorify, then, (O Prophet), the name of your Great Lord. 74
