In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou folded in garments! 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 Half of it,- or a little less, 3 Or a little more, and recite the Qur'an slowly and distinctly. 4 Verily We! anon We shall cast upon thee a weighty word. 5 Prayer at night leaves the strongest impression on one's soul and the words spoken are more consistent. 6 You have by day prolonged occupations. 7 So remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with exclusive devotion. 8 (He is) Lord of the East and the West: there is no god but He: take Him therefore for (thy) Disposer of Affairs. 9 and endure with patience whatever people may say [against thee,] and avoid them with a comely avoidance. 10 And leave Me with [the matter of] the deniers, those of ease [in life], and allow them respite a little. 11 Indeed We have heavy fetters and a blazing fire. 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment - 13 On the Day when the earth with all its mountains quake and the mountains become heaps of shifting sand. 14 Surely We have sent to you a Messenger as a witness over you, just as We had sent a Messenger to Pharaoh. 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed Our Messenger, so We seized him with a terrible seizing. 16 Then how can you avoid the punishment, if you disbelieve, on a Day that will make the children grey-headed (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)? 17 [the Day] on which the skies shall be rent asunder, [and] His promise [of resurrection] fulfilled? 18 Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. 19
