The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise, and warn. 2 And thy Sustainer's greatness glorify! 3 Purify your inner self, 4 And pollution shun. 5 And do not confer favor to acquire more 6 But, for thy Lord's (Cause), be patient and constant! 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for those without Faith. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And I adjusted affairs for him adjustably; 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Nay! He is forward unto Our signs; 16 [and so] I shall constrain him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 For he thought and he plotted -- 18 So accursed be he, how evilly did he decide! 19 Again, ruin seize him, how did he hatch a scheme? 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then frowned he and scowled. 22 Then he turned back and was proud; 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 What will let you know what the Scorching is like! 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen. 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
