[AND the tribe of] Thamud gave the lie to [one of God's] message-hearers 141 When their brother Saleh said to them: "Will you not take heed?" 142 Behold, I am an apostle [sent by Him] to you, [and therefore] worthy of your trust: 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Will you be left secure in what is here; 146 amidst the gardens, springs, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 Have fear of God and obey me. 150 “And do not follow those who exceed the limits.” 151 “Those who spread turmoil in the earth, and do no reform.” 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 Thou art nothing but a mortal like ourselves! Come, then, forward with a token [of thy mission] if thou art a man of truth!" 154 (Saleh) said: "Here is a she-camel. She has a right of drinking water, and you have a right of drinking it on appointed turns. 155 so do her no harm, or the punishment of an awful day will befall you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily! Your Lord, He is indeed the All-Mighty, the Most Merciful. 159
