The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ No! I swear by this land, 1 this land in which thou art free to dwell 2 And the begetter and whom he begot. 3 Verily, We have created man in toil. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He says (boastfully): "I have wasted wealth in abundance!" 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Did We not make two eyes for him? 8 And a tongue and two lips? 9 Have We not shown him the ways of good and evil? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 To free a neck (from the burden of debt or slavery), 13 Or giving food in a day of hunger (famine), 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 so that he becomes one of those who believe, charge each other to be patient, and charge each other to be merciful. 17 Those who do so are the people of the right hand, 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
