And whoever is averse to the Remembrance of the Most Gracious, We appoint a devil upon him, who stays with him. 36 and they bar them from the way, and they think they are guided, 37 To the extent that when the disbeliever will be brought to Us, he will say to his devil, “Alas – if only there was the distance* of east and west, between you and me!” – so what an evil companion** he is! (* Had I not listened to you. **They will be bound together in chains.) 38 And never will it benefit you that Day, when you have wronged, that you are [all] sharing in the punishment. 39 Can you, (O Prophet), then make the deaf hear, or direct to the Right Way the blind or one lost in manifest error? 40 Even if We take thee away, We shall be sure to exact retribution from them, 41 or We show you a part of that which We have promised them, for indeed We have power over them. 42 So hold fast to all that has been revealed to thee: for, behold, thou art on a straight way; 43 And verily it is an admonition unto thee and thy people; and presently ye will be questioned. 44 Ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you, "Did We ever appoint gods to be worshipped besides the Beneficent One?" 45
