No blame is on you if ye divorce women while yet ye have not touched them nor settled unto them a settlement. Benefit them; on the affluent is due according to his means and on the straitened is due according to his means, a reputable present and duty on the well-doers. 236 And if you divorce them before you have touched them and you have appointed for them a portion, then (pay to them) half of what you have appointed, unless they relinquish or he should relinquish in whose hand is the marriage tie; and it is nearer to righteousness that you should relinquish; and do not neglect the giving of free gifts between you; surely Allah sees what you do. 237 Attend constantly to prayers and to the middle prayer and stand up truly obedient to Allah. 238 And if you are in fear, then afoot or mounted; but when you are secure, then remember God, as He taught you the things that you knew not. 239 And those of you who die and leave wives behind, they shall make a bequest unto their wives a year's maintenance without their having to go out, then if they go out, then no blame is on you for that which they do with themselves reputably, and Allah is Mighty, Wise. 240 And the divorced women, too, shall have [a right to] maintenance in a goodly manner: this is a duty for all who are conscious of God. 241 Thus doth Allah Make clear His Signs to you: In order that ye may understand. 242
