The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 that [which he conveys to you] is but [a divine] inspiration with which he is being inspired 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 Lord of power and wisdom. So he acquired poise and balance, 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 then drew near and suspended hung, 8 Till he was (distant) two bows' length or even nearer, 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 What, will you dispute with him about what he sees! 12 For indeed he saw him at a second descent, 13 At the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary - 14 near which is Paradise. 15 with the lote-tree veiled in a veil of nameless splendour 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 and your third idol al-Manat (whom you considered as God's daughters)? 20 What! for you the male sex, and for Him, the female? 21 That, then, is an unjust division. 22 These [allegedly divine beings] are nothing but empty names which you have invented - you and your forefathers - [and] for which God has bestowed no warrant from on high. They [who worship them] follow nothing but surmise and their own wishful thinking - although right guidance has now indeed come unto them from their Sustainer. 23 Or is there for man whatever he wishes? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
