And they ask you about Zulqarnain. Say: I will recite to you an account of him. 83 Indeed We gave him authority in the land and bestowed him the means of everything. 84 and he followed a way 85 Until when he reached the setting-place of the sun, he perceived it setting in a miry spring, and he found beside it a nation. We said: Zul Qarnian! either chastise them or take in respect of them the way of kindness. 86 He said: "As for him (a disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah) who does wrong, we shall punish him; and then he will be brought back unto his Lord; Who will punish him with a terrible torment (Hell). 87 But as for one who believes and does righteousness, he will have a reward of Paradise, and we will speak to him from our command with ease." 88 Then followed he (another) way, 89 until he came to the rising-place of the sun, where he found it rising on a people for whom We had provided no shelter from it. 90 So (it was)! And We knew all about him (Dhul-Qarnain). 91 Then he followed still another path, 92 Until when he arrived between the two mountains, he found beside them a people who well-nigh understood not a word. 93 They said, “O Zul-Qarnain – indeed Yajuj and Majuj* are spreading chaos in the land – so shall we assign for you a consideration upon the condition that you set up a wall between us and them?” (* Gog and Magog.) 94 He said, “That which my Lord has given me control over is better, therefore help me with strength – I shall set up a barrier between you and them.” 95 Give me pieces of iron - till, when he had levelled up (the gap) between the cliffs, he said: Blow! - till, when he had made it a fire, he said: Bring me molten copper to pour thereon. 96 Thus were they made powerless to scale it or to dig through it. 97 He said: 'This is a mercy from my Lord. But when my Lord's promise is come, He will make it dust. The promise of my Lord is true' 98 ۞ And on that Day We shall let some of them surge like waves against others, and the Trumpet shall be blown. Then We shall gather them all together. 99 We will fully expose the view of hell on that Day to the disbelievers, 100 Those whose eyes had been within a cover [removed] from My remembrance, and they were not able to hear. 101
