The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A doubter once demanded that punishment be immediately meted out, 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 The angels and the spirit ascend unto him in a Day the measure whereof is (as) fifty thousand years: 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 Verily! They see it (the torment) afar off, 6 but We see it is nigh. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another [(i.e. on the Day of Resurrection), there will be none but see his father, children and relatives, but he will neither speak to them nor will ask them for any help)], - the Mujrim, (criminal, sinner, disbeliever, etc.) would desire to ransom himself from the punishment of that Day by his children. 11 And his wife and his brother 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 And all those who are on the earth, to save himself. 14 By no means! Verily it is a Flame. 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 Fretful when evil befalleth him 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 except those that pray 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 for the impoverished nonrequester and the requester, 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord. 27 Surely no one can be secure from the punishment of his Lord, -- 28 And those who guard their private parts, 29 Except in the case of their wives or those whom their right hands possess-- for these surely are not to be blamed, 30 So those who desire more than this it is they who are the transgressors. 31 who honor their trust and promises, 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 all these shall live honourably in the Gardens. 35
