The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And disbelieveth in goodness; 9 We shall facilitate the path to affliction 10 His riches will not save him when he perisheth. 11 Surely, it is for Us to provide guidance -- 12 and to Us belong the Next Life and the present. 13 I have now warned you of a Blazing Fire, 14 No one will burn in it but the most wretched, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 But only seeking the countenance of his Lord, Most High. 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
