The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 Have fear of God and obey me. 144 I do not ask for any payment for my preaching. I shall receive my reward from the Lord of the Universe. 145 Shall ye be left secure in that which is here before us. 146 "Gardens and Springs, 147 "And corn-fields and date-palms with spathes near breaking (with the weight of fruit)? 148 Will you still skilfully hew houses out of the mountains? 149 So fear Allah and obey me. 150 And obey not the command of the extravagant. 151 "Who make mischief in the land, and reform not." 152 They replied: "You are nothing but one of those who are bewitched; 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said: yonder is a she-camel; to her a drink, and to you a drink, each on a day known. 155 “And do not touch her with evil intentions for the punishment of the Great Day will seize you.” 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
