The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
By the star when it goes down, (or vanishes). 1 This fellow-man of yours has not gone astray, nor is he deluded, 2 nor does he speak out of his own desire. 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 The Strong; then the Spectacle inclined towards him. 6 standing poised at the highest point on the horizon, 7 Thereafter he drew nigh, then he let himself down. 8 until he was two bow-lengths away or even closer 9 When He revealed to His votary what He revealed. 10 The heart lied not in that which he saw. 11 what, will you dispute with him what he sees? 12 And verily he saw him yet another time 13 At the farthest lote-tree; 14 Near which is the garden, the place to be resorted to. 15 When there comes to the Lote Tree, that which comes 16 his eye swerved not; nor swept astray. 17 Assuredly he beheld of the sign of his Lord, the greatest. 18 Have you then considered Al-Lat, and Al-'Uzza (two idols of the pagan Arabs). 19 And Manat, the third, the last? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 That indeed is an unfair division -- 22 They are but names, named by you and your fathers. Allah has not sent down any authority for them. They follow conjecture and their soul's desire, eventhough the guidance of their Lord has come to them. 23 Nay, shall man have (just) anything he hankers after? 24 But to Allah belongs the last (Hereafter) and the first (the world). 25
