A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a multitude from the later generations. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 Amidst scorching wind and scalding water. 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Indeed they were, before that, indulging in affluence, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then you went astray, you that belied, 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And drinking on top of it from scalding water 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 This shall be their entertainment on the Day of Judgement. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Have you considered the seed you spill? 58 Do you yourselves create it, or are We the Creators? 59 We! it is We Who have decreed death unto you all. And We are not to be outrun. 60 from replacing you by others like yourselves or changing your forms and re-creating you in forms that you know nothing of. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 See ye the seed that ye sow in the ground? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We pleased, We should have certainly made it broken down into pieces, then would you begin to lament: 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
