The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 And you, [O Muhammad], are free of restriction in this city - 2 And by oath of your forefather Ibrahim, and by you – his illustrious son! 3 Verily We have created man into toil and struggle. 4 Does He think that no one will ever have control over him? 5 He saith: I have wasted riches plenteous. 6 Does he believe that none has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him two eyes 8 And a tongue and a pair of lips? 9 and guided him on the two paths (of good and evil)? 10 But he has not attempted the ascent. 11 What will explain to you what the ascent is? 12 (It is:) freeing the bondman; 13 Or, feeding, in a day of privation, 14 An orphan of near relationship 15 Or a needy person in misery 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 Their place will be on the right hand. 18 And those who disbelieve in Our signs, they are the Companions of the Left Hand; 19 On them will be Fire vaulted over (all round). 20
