AND WHEN the messengers [of God] came to the house of Lot, 61 He said: "Ye appear to be uncommon folk." 62 They said, 'Nay, but we have brought thee that concerning which they were doubting. 63 And bring thee the Truth, and lo! we are truth-tellers. 64 So set out thou with thy house hold in a portion of the night, and follow thou their backs, and let not one of you look back, and pass whither ye are commanded. 65 And We made plain the case to him, that the root of them (who did wrong) was to be cut at early morn. 66 The people of the city came to him rejoicing. 67 He said: 'These are my guests; do not shame me. 68 And fear Allah, and humiliate me not. 69 They said: "Did we not forbid thee (to speak) for all and sundry?" 70 [Lout (Lot)] said: "These (the girls of the nation) are my daughters (to marry lawfully), if you must act (so)." 71 By your life, (O Prophet), they went about blindly stumbling in their intoxication. 72 And thereupon the blast [of Our punishment] overtook them at the time of sunrise, 73 We turned the town upside-down and showered on them lumps of baked clay. 74 Lo! therein verily are portents for those who read the signs. 75 And lo! it is upon a road still uneffaced. 76 Indeed in that is a sign for the believers. 77 And the people of Aykah were also wrong-doers. 78 So We chastised them. The desolate locations of both communities lie on a well-known highway. 79
