a multitude of the ancients, 39 And a (goodly) number from those of later times. 40 As for the People on the Left: how miserable will be the People on the Left! 41 (they shall live) amid burning winds and boiling water, 42 And a shade of black smoke, 43 Which is neither cool nor is for respect. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And they used to persist in the great violation, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say: "Indeed, the earlier and the later generations 49 will be brought together for an appointment on an appointed day. 50 Then shall you, O you who err and call it a lie! 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 Fill your bellies with it, 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We created you, then why do you believe not? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 And have you seen that [seed] which you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 Surely, we have been deprived (of the benefits)". 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 And have you seen the fire that you ignite? 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it a Reminder (for the Hell-fire, in the Hereafter); and an article of use for the travellers (and all the others, in this world). 73 Then, exalt the Name of your Lord, the Great. 74
