The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 and magnify the glory of your Lord, 3 And your clothing purify 4 Pollution shun! 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 For the sake of thy Lord, be patient! 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 it will be a hard day 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me with him whom I alone have created, 11 And then bestowed upon him ample means, 12 and children living in his presence, 13 And made life smooth and comfortable for him! 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Not at all! Surely, he has been disobedient to Our verses. 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 And said, "This is not but magic imitated [from others]. 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what will explain to thee what Hell-Fire is? 27 It neither spares, nor releases, 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 We have appointed none but angels as the keepers of the Fire, and We have not made their number but as a trial for the unbelievers so that those who have been endowed with the Book will be convinced and the believers' faith will increase, and neither those who have been endowed with the Book nor the believers will fall into any doubt. As for those in whose hearts there is a sickness as well as the unbelievers, they will say: “What did Allah aim at by this strange parable?” Thus does Allah let whomsoever He pleases to go astray, and directs whomsoever He pleases to the Right Way. And none knows the hosts of your Lord but He. (And Hell has only been mentioned here) that people may take heed. 31
