The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and the day in splendour 2 And [by] He who created the male and female, 3 O men, you truly strive towards the most diverse ends! 4 Then as for him who giveths and feareth Him. 5 and confirms the reward most fair, 6 Surely We will ease his way unto the state of ease. 7 But he who is a greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 and so I warn you of the raging fire 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 The one who denied and turned away. 16 And Al-Muttaqun (the pious and righteous - see V. 2:2) will be far removed from it (Hell). 17 Who giveth his wealth that he may grow (in goodness). 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 but only to seek the good pleasure of his Lord Most High. 20 surely, he shall be satisfied. 21
