The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 the unbelievers which none can prevent. 2 From Allah, Lord of the Ascending Stairways 3 To Him the angels and the Spirit mount up, in a day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Lo! they behold it afar off 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains shall be as plucked wool-tufts, 9 And not a friend shall ask a friend, 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Eager to roast; 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 and amassed (riches) and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good befalls him 21 Except the observers of prayer - 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who testify to the Day of Requital. 26 And those who fear the torment of their Lord, 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 [not giving way to their desires] with any but their spouses - that is, those whom they rightfully possess [through wedlock]: for then, behold, they are free of all blame, 30 But whoso seeketh more than that, those are they who are transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 And those who are firm upon their testimonies. 33 and who observe their prayers. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
