A large group from the earlier generations. 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Surely they had lived before in luxury, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 It was they who said, "Shall we be resurrected after we die and have turned into dust and bones? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 "Then will ye truly,- O ye that go wrong, and treat (Truth) as Falsehood!- 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 and will thereupon have to drink [many a draught] of burning despair 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We mete out death among you, and We are not to be outrun, 60 Had We so wished, nothing could have hindered Us from replacing you by others like yourselves, or transforming you into beings you know nothing about. 61 And verily ye know the first creation. Why, then, do ye not reflect? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We willed, surely We would make it chaff, so that ye would be left wondering. 65 "Verily, we are ruined! 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds or is it We Who brought it down? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Produce ye the tree thereof, or are We the Producer? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
