a large throng from the ancients, 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 And those on the left hand: What of those on the left hand? 41 mid burning winds and boiling waters 42 and the shadows of black smoke 43 (That shadow) neither cool, nor (even) good, 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 And were stubborn upon the great sin. 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 We and our fathers of old? 48 Proclaim, "Without doubt all - the former and the latter." 49 Will be gathered together on a certain day which is predetermined. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Will eat of the tree of Zaqqum, 52 "Then you will fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink boiling water on top of it, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 This shall be their hospitality on the Day of Doom. 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 Did you ever consider the sperm that you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 You are well aware of the first creation; then, do you learn no lesson from it? 62 So what is your opinion regarding what you sow? 63 Do you make it grow or is it We who make it grow? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 (Saying): "We are indeed Mughramun (i.e. ruined or lost the money without any profit, or punished by the loss of all that we spend for cultivation, etc.)! [See Tafsir Al-Qurtubi, Vol. 17, Page 219] 66 "Nay, but we are deprived!" 67 Have you ever considered the water which you drink? 68 Is it ye who shed it from the raincloud, or are We the Shedder? 69 If We willed, We could make it bitter, so why are you not grateful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 So exalt the name of your Lord, the Most Great. 74
