a good many of olden times, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor beneficial. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say: What! when we die and have become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 will indeed be gathered together at a fixed time on an appointed Day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Ye verily will eat of a tree called Zaqqum 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Do ye then see?- The (human Seed) that ye throw out,- 58 Do you create a child out of it, or are We its creators? 59 It is We who have ordained death for all of you; and We cannot be prevented 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 And you have indeed learnt about the first creation, so why do you not ponder? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 If We will, We would make it broken stubble and you would remain wondering, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 Nay! we are deprived. 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it from the rainclouds to come down, or are We the Causer of it to come down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Have you raised its tree, or We have raised it? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 Then celebrate with praises the name of thy Lord, the Supreme! 74
