۞ We had earlier given Abraham true direction, for We knew him well. 51 When he said to his father and his people: What are these images to whose worship you cleave? 52 They answered: "We found our forefathers worshipping them." 53 He said, “Indeed you all – you and your forefathers – were in open error.” 54 They asked: "Hast thou come unto us [with this claim] in all earnest - or art thou one of those jesters?" 55 He said, "[No], rather, your Lord is the Lord of the heavens and the earth who created them, and I, to that, am of those who testify. 56 Abraham said to himself, "By God! I will devise a plan against their idols when they are away." 57 So he smashed them up to pieces with the exception of the biggest, so that they may turn to it. 58 [When they saw what had happened,] they said: "Who has done this to our gods? Verily, one of the worst wrongdoers is he!" 59 Some of them said, "We heard a youth called Abraham speaking against the idols". 60 They said: Then bring him (hither) before the people's eyes that they may testify. 61 They said, "Have you done this to our gods, O Abraham?" 62 He said, "Rather, this - the largest of them - did it, so ask them, if they should [be able to] speak." 63 Then they turned to one another and said, "It is you yourselves who are in the wrong," 64 And they were utterly confounded, and they said: Well thou knowest that these speak not. 65 (So Abraham) said: "Then why do you worship something apart from God that cannot profit you or do you harm? 66 Fie upon you and that you serve apart from God! Do you not understand?' 67 They said: burn him, and succour your gods, if ye will be doing. 68 'O Fire' We said, 'be coolness and safety for Abraham' 69 Then they sought a stratagem against him: but We made them the ones that lost most! 70 We took Abraham and Lot safely to the land in which We had sent blessings to the worlds. 71 We gave him, in excess, Isaac, and Jacob (for a grandson); and We made each righteous 72 and appointed them leaders to guide by Our Command and We revealed to them to do good deeds, and to establish the prayer, and the giving of charity, and they were for Us worshipers. 73 And to Lut, too, We gave Judgment and Knowledge, and We saved him from the town which practised abominations: truly they were a people given to Evil, a rebellious people. 74 We encompassed him in Our mercy; he was a righteous man. 75
