And indeed, We created man from sounding clay of altered black smooth mud. 26 And the jinn, We created aforetime from the smokeless flame of fire. 27 Your Lord said to the angels, "I am about to bring into being a man wrought from mud. 28 So when I have made him complete and breathed into him of My spirit, fall down making obeisance to him. 29 So the angels fell prostrate, all of them together 30 But Iblis did not; he refused to be with the prostrates. 31 Said He, 'What ails thee, Iblis, that thou art not among those bowing?' 32 He answered, “It does not befit me to prostrate myself to a human whom You have created from sounding clay made out of black smelly mud.” 33 The Lord said: "Then get out of here; you are rejected, 34 and will be subjected to condemnation until the Day of Judgment." 35 Iblis prayed, "Lord, grant me respite until the Day of Judgment". 36 (Allah) said: "Respite is granted thee 37 till the Day the time whereof is known [to Me alone]." 38 He said: My Lord! Because Thou hast sent me astray, I verily shall adorn the path of error for them in the earth, and shall mislead them every one, 39 Save such of them as are Thy perfectly devoted slaves. 40 (To which God) said: "This way is right by Me. 41 “Indeed you do not have any power over My bondmen, except those wanderers who follow you.” (The devil is unsuccessful in tempting Allah’s chosen bondmen to commit sin.) 42 And lo! for all such, hell will be the promised place. 43 There are seven gates in it, and to each gate a portion of them has been allotted. 44
