The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their fellowman Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?” 142 Lo! I am a faithful messenger unto you, 143 So fear Allah and obey me. 144 And I do not ask you for it any payment. My payment is only from the Lord of the worlds. 145 “Will you be left peacefully in these favours over here?” 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 and fields, and [these] palm-trees with slender spathes? 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 Fear Allah and obey me 150 Do not obey the orders of the transgressors 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They replied: 'Surely, you are one of those bewitched. 153 you are no different from a mortal like us. So produce a sign if you are truthful." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 "And touch her not with harm, lest the torment of a Great Day seize you." 156 But they hamstrung her; and on the morrow were repentant, 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And most surely your Lord is the Mighty, the Merciful. 159
