The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 From Allah, the Lord of all pinnacles. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 And the mountains will be like wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all who are on the earth; so that this might deliver him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 and it shall call him who withdrew and turned his back 17 and amass [wealth] and thereupon withhold [it from their fellow-men]. 18 ۞ Indeed man is created very impatient, greedy. 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good touches him; 21 Except those who pray, 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For the beggar and the destitute. 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and fear the chastisement of their Lord – 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 and guard their private parts 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 But those who seek more than this will be transgressors; 31 And those who protect the property entrusted to them, and their agreements. 32 Who uphold their testimonies, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those are highly honored in the Gardens. 35
